The days of the designer wood craftsman are numbered. Improved industrial wood machinery techniques have put furniture design on to the computer screen. The individual artisan or small group workshop is in direct (tool) competition with the industrial world and can only compete through hand oriented skills and original pieces of furniture, the cost of which narrows his market to the extent that his prime survival occupation is as a builder of fitted cupboards in medium density fiber board, MDF.
The very nature of wood limits him, and industrially manufactured inert wood products are the rule. Solid wood is for sculptors! Contemporary furniture design is more suited to inert materials such as metal, glass, marble, and plastic products, wood being used for its visual and tactile properties rather than its mechanical function.

Hi Andrew, I JUST found your blog...and it's great. You're totally right about woodworking, it's rarity in it's highest form with fine woods as opposed to all the inert materials moving into our lives.
You do such fine work, it must be very painful to be up against such a worldwide turn. I just hope you never loose faith in beauty and the uplifting and healing vibrations we feel from being in the presence of beauty.
Keep on keeping on with your fine work!!
Jeffy
